A Days Worth of Work for One Wear, 2022
The Rules:
In preparation, take a leave of absence from school to live as a ‘Lady of Leisure’
Towards the end of January join a weekly sewing circle to acquire basic skills in construction
Detail each day, jot down tips and add photographs of process in a red diary
Practice penmanship with a purple fountain pen for 25 minutes each evening
Find a new friend through Etsy who will send seven varying colours of picot elastic
Plot coordinates of home, sewing studio, sewing store and school on a map. These will become the arena to perform tasks
Ping pong between the sewing store and home in order to perfectly match elastic to thread as shipments trickle in from new friend
For one week, venture to a different second-hand shop within the boundaries to source fabric each day
The fabric must be a white t-shirt with a graphic on the back. Any shirt can be chosen but keep in mind the colour of tricot elastic that will be used according to the day
Continue to visit the sewing circle once a week. Learn much beyond sewing from conversations heard here.
Research how to remove mustard stains from white t-shirt
For one week, wake up and make a pair of underwear for that day
The front of the underwear will be plain. The graphic part of the shirt will be used for the rear.
Learn how to embroider. Hand Embroider each day of the week on the front of every pair
Attach picot elastic to waist and leg bands
Construction should occur following breakfast and take place on the dining table. Radio is permitted.
Fabric for the underwear will be cut, pinned and adjusted to the body each day depending on desired fit
Finally commit to Los Angeles. Purchase iron and ironing board to ease process of embroidery
Write each day of the week out fifty-five times. Find a winner, and use this as a guide to embroider
Leaving the house is only allowed once the pair for that day has been completed
Facetime a far away friend at four o’clock in the morning and paint the drying rack to display the week
Pack it up, position and present it
